'Resistance' by PeteB: 3D Luke Skywalker

If someone knows something about resistance, you can't go around Luke Skywalker. He's been years in the resistance against "The Empire". Almost seven movies! The figure I've painted is a 3D figure I received as a gift from a friend from Croatia. He came together with another Star Wars figure I've painted for my youngest son, Boba Fett. And it looks like it is beginning to be a habit that I'm restoring broken figures. From this one the light saber was broken. I think I maneged wel to fix the damage. Well here is Luke and may the force be with him!

'Resistance' by PeterD: Badass Women of the Dutch Resistance

I've been down with the lurgy so these sat almost done until Saturday morning.  I did some rudimentary ground cover, which needs tidying up but met the deadline.

  

As noted on one my earlier posts, I bought into a Bad Squiddo Kickstarter featuring women of the WW2 Resistance.  So for the Resistance Theme Round I present the Dutch Resistance fighters Hannie Schaft, Freddie Oversteegen and her sister Truus Oversteegen.  I'm rather infamous for long winded history posts, but this time I suggest following the links as I don't think that I can do these three young women justice (Hannie was the eldest at 24 in 1945).

Note to self, add red highlights to Hannie (centre) and darken the sisters' hair.  Also brush the ground cover off the figures!

The trio worked together on the full gamut of Resistance activity - sabotage, assassinations, transporting documents and arms, helping Jewish children escape etc.  Hannie would make sure to dress up and do full makeup before her operations saying “I’ll die clean and beautiful.”  "The girl with the red hair" became one of the Dutch Gestapo's most wanted.

As the heat turned up, they conducted operations in disguise.  Hannie cut her hair short and dyed it black while Truus dressed as a man.  Eventually Hannie was caught and executed in the final weeks of the war, despite an agreement between the Gestapo and Resistance to end executions.  The Oversteegen sisters lived full lives and survived into their nineties (this seems to be a theme among surviving resistance fighters in the Bad Squiddo kickstarter).  All three are honoured in the Netherlands and other countries, particularly Hannie.

Had a last minute panic attack when I realized that I gave the wrong figure the black hair, leading to a Saturday am dye job on both.

Like all Bad Squiddo women of WW2 figures, these are excellent.  Well researched, nicely sculpted, full of character and a joy to paint.  That's five 28mm figures for 25 points, and I'm going to claim a squirrel point as the Dutch resistance was operating in a different theatre than the other fighters that I've painted this challenge.

Resistance: Submit a freshly painted figure (or figures) and/or piece of terrain illustrating resistance by a group or individual. The subject can be from history, myth or fiction.

Well that should be easy, any of my Finns fit in perfick!

I missed out posting my Toy Story Theme by a day, so I've made sure I've got the Resistance theme done this time round.

Here we have a Finnish Medic and his unarmoured helpers., all figures are from Parkfield Miniatures.

During the Winter War, Finnish medics worked under extremely harsh conditions to treat soldiers wounded in the fighting against the Soviet Union. Operating in deep snow, freezing temperatures, and often under enemy fire, they evacuated casualties from forests and frozen battlefields using sleds, skis, and improvised stretchers. Despite limited medical supplies and small field hospitals, Finnish doctors, nurses, and stretcher-bearers managed to stabilize thousands of wounded troops, playing a crucial role in maintaining the resilience and resistance of the Finland’s army during the brutal winter campaign.

For the points i will get 50pts for the Theme Round Bonus

and 15 points for all three 25mm figures, making a grand total of 65 pts!

'Resistance' by StephenS: Dead-Eye Davy

I picked up a copy of Warlord Games’ Glory, Hallelujah! Black Powder supplement after reading the excellent novel 'Killer Angels' by Michael Shaara and developing an urge to game the period. The model came along as a freebie named 'Dead-Eye Davy' and is painted as a Confederate solely because I lost the alternative Union soldier head it originally came with.

I have to confess that up until the moment I started typing this post, I had it fixed in my head that the theme was Rebellion! With a slight swivel, though, the miniature can represent resistance — the resistance of the Confederacy to the Federal government of the day, as well as the ability of individual Confederate soldiers to endure and resist despite shortages of manpower and equipment while facing their more numerous and wealthier brothers to the North during the American Civil War.

But enough of the big ideas. The miniature is a 28 mm metal figure from Warlord Games and should net 5 points, along with the bonus, for a total of 55 points.

'Resistance' by StuartL: The Free French

Hi all,

Work has been keeping me very, very busy, but I have managed to get a few minis done in time for this bonus round. 

A couple of years ago I painted up half a squad of Free French. Now, I have finished up the other half. 

While the common image is that the French surrendered early on in WW2, the truth is that some of them kept fighting through to the end of the war. They were equipped with old French gear, then some British equipment and finally some American uniforms. These brave men fought to resist the Germans, even after their home country had been conquered. If that doesn't embody resistance, I don't know what does.

These models are a mix of different makers. I know I bought a lot of Warlord minis for this army, but I also bought from two or three other ranges as well, so I can't say for sure where these minis came from. They were easy to paint up though. Nice, crisp details all round.

    And here are both the new minis and the old ones I did in 2023.

   Five 28mm scale infantry will earn me 25 points, plus the 50 for the bonus round for a nice 75 points for my tally. They also qualify for a quick Squirrel.

'Resistance' from TomL: The Crew of the Scorpio

Continuing my personal Blake 7 obsession theme, my resistance group is the second group of freedom fighters on the show - the final crew of the Scorpio. The Terran Federation slowly eliminated most of Blake's first crew, computer and ship. With some new crew, a new ship and the annoyingly obsequeious and subservient new computer "slave", Avon and the surprisingly loyal Villa fought to the end. Perhaps laying the groundwork for the empires eventual fall.

I did like how Villa often had a snack handy.

While I enjoyed watching the show in its entirety years later, for a TV production the early 80’s it had a devastating & polarizing ending.  Unfortunately Paul Darrow’s attempts to get another season never succeeded.  So we were left with a "heroic death trope" ending. 

This is another set of Beast in the Brooch miniatures painted with Foundry, Vallejo and Two Thin Coats acrylics.  

Points are pretty simple at 85.  7 28mm figures for 35 points plus the theme bonus of 50.

'Toy Story' from DallasE: Indigenous Warrior, 1876

The main project I intended to tackle in this Challenge was the Little Bighorn. This year marks the sesquicentennial of the battle, the most famous victory of the coalition of Indigenous peoples over the US Army. It's also my 55th birthday this year and if all goes to plan I will celebrate by hosting a wargame of the battle. But first I have to paint the models!

I have a large collection of (so far) unpainted models from Foundry that will form the forces in the battle. I just love these figures as they are so well-done and characterful. This is "Goes Through the Camp" from the Dog Soldiers pack.

He was really fun to paint and went up in an evening. The secret sauce to the skin tone is GW Ratskin Flesh over a Doombull Brown base. I'd intended to paint 10 or so Seventh Cavalry on foot to accompany him but decided to just get him done and submitted before the Toy Story deadline.

And speaking of the Toy Story theme... I can never think of the Plains Wars without thinking about Marx, the company that pretty much invented the "toy soldier playset." Marx was in business from 1919 to 1980 but the toys I always think of were these playsets, marketed in the 1950s and 1960s and based on historical themes and TV shows (!). They were crammed with stuff and usually sold for less than $7USD. While Marx is long out of business the molds survived and newly made figures are still sold.

Anyway that's one 28mm infantry model for 5 points, plus 50 for the theme. More Plains Wars stuff coming soon, I promise!
