'Music/Musician' from AdamC: Four Guys Fiddling Around

I would like to present my Music bonus entry four 28mm Miniatures from Eureka.

At first glance the costumes appear identical but each has unique details on their coats and waistcoats.

Some like the base fiddle are fairly plain.

Others like this violinist have fancy embellishments. Such as hus red gold and black waist coat.

I should really have done individual photos before basing but time was limited.

I did another rug printout base (you may recall these from last year. I have music stands but couldn't get them done in rime (I forgot about them.) The result is this looks more like a jam session than a concert and that's not a bad thing.

So i should get 20 point for four 25mm figures plus the bonus. Hope you like these.  There is a harpsichordist from the same set but his harpsichord isn't ready.

'Music/Musician' from Barks: All that Jazz

Marie Lambeau- jazz singer by night, monster hunter also by night. Gifted with a superb singing voice, she also learnt about spells and monsters from her grand-mère in the bayou.

She’s the fourth character for my Mansions of Madness entry the other week. She’s a simple, well executed sculpt with a lovely singing face.

'Music/Musician' from BenitoM: Marching to the Drums

My constribution to the Bonus Round are four Napoleonic drummers models, two Austrians and two French.

The French models are painted one as Light and one as Line Infantry respectively. These are metal models from Perry.

The Austrian are also from Perry but this time from the plastic infantry box and represent the first cadre of two new Line battalions that I expect to paint over the next weeks.

The four models are 28 mm. This should add 70 points to my Challenge score ( 4 x 5 points + 50 bonus points) and must also be accounted in the Black Powder Duel roster.

'Music/Musician' from BrettM: Bard with Guitar

Had this Bard in my random minis bin for a while now. Figured best way to get it painted was with this theme.

Not quite sure if I want to do more with the base or not. Kept it simple for now. Was able to paint him up pretty quick. Amazing how quick I can paint a mini when its the only one I'm painting. Rather than a group of them.

Point wise 5pts plus 50 for theme. Total of 55 points

'Music/Musician' from ByronM: Ancient Greek Musicians

This week was really hard to do something for as I really wanted to stay on track with my projects, but still wanted to enter something.  I had several ideas, but all of them were not related to my current projects, and then the Greek command figures showed up from Steve Saleh from Gorgon Studios and I had an idea.

I needed a command stand for the Athenian detachment for my Greeks and there were a few musicians in the pack of characters, why not have some encouraging a Greek hero.  Well, it almost didn't work, as I ran the idea by my wife, and she said it would be cheating for me to use these figures, as a pipe / recorder / flute (?)  is not a real instrument and I would be stretching the theme and that is not at all what Curt would have meant.  She said I needed to do a band or orchestra or something!  So I pulled up past theme topics and I showed her how some themes get "stretched" and she then agreed that these were fine.

So, with the bosses blessing it was onto painting time, which was short.  I only started these on Thursday and still had to get my normal Saturday entries up and ready.

These sculpts are great through as they have so much character and charm.  They were also very simple being in robes and having simple instruments, so I spent a bunch of time trying to get the flesh tones right and a rough linen fabric colour right.  I think they are close, but couldn't get them just right.

The warrior they are playing into battle was much easier despite having way more detail to paint.  since he had less skin showing it was all armour and clothing to deal with.  I used a decal from Little Big Men, but chose not to put a colour under it as I wanted the shield to look like old Greek pottery with black on terracotta, or in this case, bronze.  While understated, I like the look.

While a simplistic take on music, I think it covers the theme enough to get me in, and gives me another command stand for my Greeks.  Two goals accomplished in one thing.

'Music/Musician' from DaveX: Polish Vistula Legion Drummer

For this fortnights bonus, I am submitting my 28mm Polish Vistula Legion Drummer.  This guy is part of a batch paint from the Warlord Games Box Set and I especially finished him first for the Music/Musician challenge.

I have never painted lace before and am pleased with how it turned out.  This chap is one of four metal figures in the box set of Warlord Games.  I enjoyed painting him.

With a mustache like that he is hardly a drummer boy

'Music/Musician' from DavidB: Barnacle Bill

Who's that knocking at my door?
Who's that knocking at my door?
Who's that knocking at my door? said the fair young maiden.
<ahem>
WEEEEELLLLLLL, Open the door you< censored> <censored>, said Barnacle Bill the sailor.....

Ummm, How about
What can you do with a drunken sailor....yeah...we will skip that one too.

The figures are from Games Workshop that I got in a Christmas mystery box from Games Workshop years ago. The sorceress and necromancer remind me a lot of Miracle Max and his witch, er wife, from the Prince's Bride. Said movie my wife never seen till we were dating and it is now her favourite movie. The whole Miracle Max shtick is her favourite scene. I still feel the necromancer's fancy hat is a touch reminiscent of the quirky hat Billy Crystal donned.

The Tavern is from Forgeworld and purchased at the very first Gamesday in Chicago. I was going to buy a lot Forgeworld Imperial tanks, but the tavern, blacksmith shop, stables, well...It seemed that together they would make a wonderful set terrain piece. I never did get the rest and all are no longer in production.

But by did I catch some serious grief from my witch, er, I mean wife! She wasn't too happy when I told her how much this gem cost. She has been less than pleased that it was providing a solid support to my mountain of neglected miniatures as well!

Although I have yet to finish the Gorkamorka gangs of Muties, diggas, and gobbos she gifted me; I proudly shown her the Gorkas and Morkas and trucks I did finish.
Her reply was" When are you going to paint that <censored>, <censored>, <censored> building you bought!"

Earlier in the week I thought this bonus round would give the proper urgency to complete it.

It is really a beautiful model and few components, the cracks and pits exposing the wattle. makeshift repairs. there is a lot of pretty details in this building.

It is designed for troops to be placed inside. I will be using it for fantasy, Scifi, and even historical battles. It doesn't seem to be too far fetched for GI's to seek shelter from German Panzer Grenadiers inside the voluminous tavern.

Yeah, I painted the inside too. It seems the sculptor ran out of steam or maybe if the inside was as detailed it would've cost more!:)

I painted up the stone floor with all the colors I used for the tavern except for the blue of tiles and windows.

I have no Idea who made the barrels.

Barrels are good for medicinal supplies, flour, hooch, nails, rum, gunpowder....did I say booze?

This is a good start to some scatter terrain too.
So one honking huge tavern, three 28mm minis, and a score of whiskey barrels....
Hopefully I'll make the cut as I'm currently watching my daughters and their friends(including boys) who went to a dance. It is snowing pretty good outside and I don't want the boys to drive home in this weather.

They were less than amused when I drove the gang to the dance while wearing my LBV with knifes  and all the other neat recon stuff.(the boys noted the knifes and none of them guessed the right number I was wearing!) My wife wouldn't let me take my mossberg, and she won't let me clean it right now either...The boys are sleeping in the spare bedroom by my mancave as I type! ;)

A parting shot courtesy of my wife.

Theory of a Deadman is one of my favourite contemporary groups and I was listening to the new album she bought me today as I was finishing this piece up. She told me she likes track #1 and thought of me. Since she is smarter than I, perhaps a hidden warning ? ;)

Artist: Theory(aka Theory of a Deadman)

'Music/Musician' from DebD: Female Bard with Lute

Hello!

Of course,  a Female Bard is my musician of choice from Dark Sword :)

Thanks!
Deb

'Music/Musician' from EvanH: Goff Rockerz!

It was inevitable, really. My last two Theme Round entries had involved greenskins of one sort or another, so when the time came to choose a suitable group of models to paint up for the 'Music/Musician' Round, it had to be these guys.

Games Workshop's 'Goff Rockers', a trio of 28mm Orks dating back at least to WH40K 2nd edition, maybe even as far back as Rogue Trader, when Orks were a lot more fun and Citadel sculptors didn't take things too seriously.

In tribute to those halcyon days, I've painted them up in a garish 'Oldhammer' colour scheme, layering up the skin to that vivid but now completely inappropriate Goblin Green. Key clothing is picked out in colours unfit for a baboon's bum, the metalwork is shiny, the eyes are red, and the figures have a satisfying weight to them. They're actual metal, and amazingly, they're still available from GW!

Basing is true to the original methods set down in the ancient scrolls; PVA glue, sand, watered-down PVA to seal, followed by a coat of dark grey drybrushed with a lighter grey for that ashen 'Deathworld terrain' look. 'Tufts'? What are these 'tufts' of which you speak? If you want grass, it's bright green sawdust or nothing!

So let's take a closer look at the lineup;

Lead Screamer and Rhythm Guitarist, Skag Nutjob. Once caused an entire squad of Noise Marines to go deaf and retreat from the battlefield. Has appeared on the cover of NME (Noise Maker Express) no fewer than six times.

On Lead Guitar (that's a guitar actually made of lead - it is heavy metal after all), here's the lovable scamp of the band, Throkk Mohok. He likes it loud and fast, and believes his red squig hide leather jacket confers additional speed to his riffs. So far, nobody has been able to prove him wrong.

Lastly, on Bass Guitar and vocals, Lord Barstud; the showiest, most glammiest Ork in music today. It is believed that he took some psychic damage during a battle with the Eldar. His squad won the day, but Barstud was left with an inexplicable desire to wear only the finest fabrics and the shiniest metalwork. Admittedly, as these tastes are filtered through the mind of an Ork, 'finest' usually equates to 'most garish', and the metalwork is heavily skewed towards wargear and ammo. And skullz. Lots of skullz.

So that's our merry band for this theme round - a bit old skool (not that there's anything wrong with that!), and a lot of fun to paint.

Until next time...

Ev

'Music/Musician' from GregB: Sound The Charge For God

28mm Crusading Knight from Perry Miniatures' First Crusade range - part of a command pack
In the last edition of the AHPC I tackled a project in a gaming era for which I had long held an interest but never quite had the courage to finally paint any figures for - the First Crusade. It was a modest start, but I finished a four-point warband for the game SAGA.  Another great example of the sort of jolt one can get from participating in the Painting Challenge!

The animation of the horse is great, and really adds to the sense that he is giving everything he has into sounding the "charge!"

Anyway, while accumulating all of those Knights, I of course picked up a command set, and the set had a musician.  When I saw this theme topic was part of the AHPC this year, I figure he would do just fine, and would be a nice addition to the other Crusaders I had already painted. So here is a Knight, sounding the "Charge!" in the Holy Land, for the Glory of God!

This is a 28mm sculpt from the Perry Twins' incredible First Crusade range. As is so often the case, the miniature was a beautiful casting and total fun to paint.  The shield markings are courtesy of the LBMS shield transfer range.  Although you can clearly see I had a bit of an issue fitting the decal properly, overall it's not too bad and he'll do fine.

Not a perfect execution on the shield decal, but it will do...
So, a break from all of that Cold War-era armour! I managed to sneak in the painting amid many rounds of olive green on all those Canadian tanks last week, so he could be ready to post while I was on the road. Always good to give the horse-painting side of my hobby brain a bit of a workout. Let's see where it leads next in what comes for the painting table...

I'm sure he will feel better once he has some Knights around him to follow his "charge!"
Thanks for looking!

'Music/Musician' from IainW: Renaissance Musician

Here we have one 28mm figure painted for the challenge and a mounted command figure previously painted who has been waiting for a companion, he's a foundry gendarme but enough about him what about the musician, well, I've had him since the 1970s he's a minifigs fantasy figure, valley of the four winds I think, which was a games workshop game but minifigs did the figures . I always thought he looked close enough to a landsknecht so he has been pressed, taken the shilling and left that fantasy stuff behind! He's quite a pleasing figure although my usual technique didn't really work on his face so I had to do a bit more work! But he's good enough and it' only taken, what, just shy of 40 years to get him painted,so that's all right then, there's hope for all the rest in my lead pile!

So that's one 25mm figure plus bonus.
All the best Iain
