'Risk Taker' by MichaelA - 'Woops Apocalypse!'

Whoops Apocalypse!

So we have arrived at the final bonus round of the 'VI Annual Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge’ - a Gambler or Risk-Taker. Again, unsure where to begin, I went delving into the lead pile, knowing that I had some splendid Post Apocalyptic miniatures that needed attention in the shape of Westphalia’s ‘Wasteland Warriors. Another seamlessly run Kickstarter, these miniatures were just too good to be left languishing in the paint queue any longer.

With a clear nod to some of the denizens of the Mad Max film franchise, I started to wonder whether the Road Warrior himself could be regarded as a Gambler or Risk-Taker? Just as I was about to hit the nitrous oxide button on the idea I realised that I didn’t actually have a ‘not Max’ miniature! Not wanting to see the idea go to waste, I did what any self respecting hobbyist would do in this situation and ordered more miniatures! Having just seen the latest instalment, Fury Road, I plumped for Hasslefree Miniatures Fox and … As usual exquisitely sculpted miniatures, but I am afraid that I rather bottled … I just couldn’t face pinning the arm and instead ordered up another variant, this time from Crooked Dice – what a lovely day!

I thoroughly enjoyed working on these, but I have to say that they were the hardest things I have had to paint in ages. Trying to get a feel of dirty or damaged clothing along with a predominance of black saw me use an inordinate amount of different paints, often working on one miniature at a time.  I was conscious that time was slipping away from me and I started to rush perhaps a little more than I would have liked. This is in evidence in some of the shading and whilst not the end of the world, the results have troubled me a little.

The inevitable result of all this was that the convoluted idea that I had originally envisaged was scrapped and so I simply present the miniatures as they are along with four pigs!
Who runs Bartertown?

  3. Whatever mental hoops the process confronted you with, they turned out wonderfully.

  5. Excellent work as always Lord Michael :)

Getting worn, black leather to look "right" is rather time-devouring, but you've done a great job :)

  7. Fascinating example of the habitues of one of the more louche gentlemen's clubs of Victorian London. "And will sir be wishing his usual recreation...?"
    ; )

  8. I'm a little embarassed by your well prganised painting table... mine always looks like Mad Max himself had a go at it. Great painting Michael! I'm not really sur if I like the bare assed back side of that punk, but am sure the ladies will appreciate it ;-)

  9. Despite the problems they turned out wonderfully and who can argue with bacon?

  10. Fabulous work Michael! I love the 'not Max' figure. Now, you just need to track down a suitable Tina Turner figure!

'But he's just a raggedy man!'

  13. Absolutely gobsmacking, but is it really sad if I say the piggies are my favourites?
