'Myth' from SanderS - 'The Reason Why'

Dear People,

Now I could have taken the term "Myth" literally, but as you might have guessed; I didn't! For this bonus round I made something I have wanted to do for quite some time. My guess is that a lot of will recognise the following: often after reading a book or watching a movie I will get taken by a fancy "to do" the period or conflict set in the mentioned book or film. So after reading the excellent "Hell Riders" by Terry Brighton, I read C. Rhodes "The Reason Why" before and have of course watched the "Charge of the Light Brigade" film earlier, I found myself wondering how to recreate the famous charge in miniature.

There are no suitable figures in 1:72, because I am no great fan of Emhar, and 28mm figures are a bit too expensive for me in the scale I usually like to recreate such projects. The motion picture "El Cid" has prompted me to obtain rather sizeable 1:72 armies which lay now mostly untouched on the plastic pile.

This got me thinking how to recreate this conflict on a not too grand scale and still be enough of a project to get it out of my system. As many others, I am sure, I am receiver of the Warlord Games newsletter and when they showed pictures of their Light Brigade casualty figures, I was sold. I now knew what to do and immediately bought them. As it tends to go with little side-projects, they get, well sidetracked. So it wasn't until the Challenge that they emerged from the depths of my mind into the foreground, for surely they are at the centre of Victorian British Myth-making!

Because these cavalrymen did not only ride into the jaws of  Death in that Godforsaken valley in the Crimea, they also rode straight off into Military Legend.

While the figures and basing is finished, the vignette as such isn't; I wanted to inscribe a piece of clear acrylic plastic with the words of Lord Tennyson's famous poem, but hadn't time to get that done before the deadline. So this version will have to do.

Cheers Sander

  2. Very well done Sander! I do like to see these large dio's entered as they do represent the spirit of "knocking it out of the park" for these themes.

    1. Thanks Anne, yeah this was a big one to put together. But it will be an one-off effort, my other bonus round entries will be more modest I'm afraid.

  3. Always staggers me when I read about the charge - I enjoyed Hell Riders particularly. Cracking job Sir.

    1. Tally ho old man! This story always reminds me of Barbara Tuchmanns "Guns of August" the same knobs making the same unnecessary mistakes again and again...
