'Fellowship' from AdamC: Fellowship Lions of Al-Rassan

I present the principle Male characters Guy Kay's The Lions of Al-Rassan. At First Glance two men about to engage in single combat for the honor of their respective armies and gods may seem an add choice for the Theme of Fellowship.

They are in many ways a study in contrast.

Rodrigo Belmonte "The Captain" a renowned  Soldier, a Rancher, commander of the most celebrated company of horse soldiers in Esperana and beyond. A family man with a beautiful wife (to whom he is loyal) and two son

Ammar ibn Khairan Poet, Councillor, swordsman, diplomat and the assassin who killed the last Caliph of Al-Rassan.  A man with few close friends and associates and string of lovers (of both sexes).
Still when they are both exiled and meet in the City of Ragosa they become fast fiends. Indeed their meeting could almost be described as "love at first sight" as many in the crowed sense the silent interaction between the two men.  On the day they meet they fight a tournament of two men against five and emerge victorious taking down five capable veteran soldiers with ease.  Ammar reflects that it was like their two bodies where commanded by a single mind.
The best showing of my poor attempt at Rodrigo's Eagle helm.

Over the next few months the two men engage in a number of adventures working together.  They swap lead position back and forth without any difficulty or rancour.   As event move in the wider world it becomes clear that the Jaddites (Christians) of Esperana and the Asharites (Muslims) of Al-Rassan are on a collision course.  Both men choose to deffer the decision even as they discuss there limited choices in what Rodrigo describes as a war in which most of the combatants will be "Driven by hatred and holiness."  Rodrigo asks the question: "what shall do men do in such a war, Ammar?  Ammar's bleak answerer: "Kill each other, until something ends in the world."

I think this shield and the matching head band are some of my strongest free hand work.
Shortly after this exchange comes one final adventure as they rescue the family of the mutual friend (and Ammar's final lover) Jahane bet Ishak from the path of the invasion.  There they are met by the army of Valledo (Rodrigo's home) and the king of that country a man of culture who while bent on conquest would prefer not to wage holly war offers Rodrigo the postion of Constable and Rodrigo offers to share that position and power with Ammar so that together perhaps they can keep the war from being "worse than ugliness."

Ammar cannot accept because of loyally to his own people, heritage and religion but manly because he Killed that last Caliph of Al-Rassan and now it is he who carries the burden of defending that land.

And so the war begins each leading the principle army of there respective side until a challenge to single combat is offered and accepted as it must be.  And so two men meet at sunset to do battle, two men who would rather set aside their arms and be friends but who cannot because of the obligations their place in society puts on them. So they battle a battle that on lookers say resembles a dance as at first they prove a match for each other until the final brutal exchange of blows where one is wounded and the other kill and the survivor weeps over the body of the man he has killed.
<SPOILER ALERT>

Ammar who survives writes this of Rodrigo the epitaph the will stand over his grave

Know, all who see these lines,
That this man, By his appetite for honor,
By his steadfastness,
By his love for his country,
By his Courage,
Was one of the Miracles of the god.

The moment I have chose to depict is the pause in their single combat that happens after the first exchange of blows and parries they are sizing each other up again and perhaps they are each dealing with the realisation that this battle is actually happening and that only one of them will survive (and what survival will cost). Guy Kay is limited in his description saying only that Rodrigos helmet has an Eagle and Ammar's has a pattern of vines. I put the vines on Ammar's shield as well as his head band. I also dressed him in a red cloak since the city who's army he lead was famous for its red dyes. Rodrigo bears a shield with the emblem of the sun and I tried to suggest the eagle on his helmet. His cloak is yellow as that color is sacred to the sun worshipping Jaddites and he stands as the champion of that faith. Both Figures are 28mm the Rodrigo figure is from Crusader miniatures El Cid collection and is in fact the dismounted el Cid on whom Rodrigo is partly based. For Ammar is from the Andalusian command set that are part of the Artizan collection. So with the bonus these should add 60 points to the pile.

'Fellowship' from AndrewE: Han Solo and Chewbacca & Raiding Party

For the Fellowship bonus round, what better models to submit than the ultimate bromance - Chewbacca and Han Solo!

Like all of the Starwars Legion models they are a dream to paint.  Nice and crisp detailing and big enough to get decent highlighting on.

Chewie was a reasonably easy model to finish with fur drybrushing and then picking out the details. Han needed a bit more care, particularly to get the different dark colours to be distinguishable from each other.

To finish them off – I also added a small unit of commandoes (aka spare wounds) to assist with the raid on the shield generator station on Endor.

These have turned out nicely as well, with the possible exception of my eye painting needing more work.

Strike team ready to go!

'Fellowship' from AlanD: 'Smrt fašizmu! Sloboda narodu!'

'Death to fascism! Freedom to the People!'

My entry for the Fellowship Round is a group of Jugoslavian Partisans from 1943, part of the Balkan project I'm working on at the moment. 'Brotherhood and Unity' was the main slogan of Jugoslavian Communists both during and after the war, a statement of fellowship that has proven all too elusive in the region.

The main reason for the success of Tito's partisan movement in WWII was that it was based on unity through ideology rather than sectarian identity. After the dismemberment of Jugoslavia by the Nazis in 1941 and the creation of the fascist Croatian state, what had been Jugoslavia was wracked by unimaginable brutality. Serbian Chetniks sought to 'cleanse' territory of Croatians and Muslims, the Croatian Ustashe began a genocide of Serbs, Jews and Muslims that made hardened Nazis queasy, and Bosnian Muslims began their own 'ethnic cleansing', especially once they were armed and organised through Himmer's SS.

In contrast, the Partisan movement led by Tito consciously rejected ethnic sectarianism. Its goal of establishing a pan-ethnic Communist state led to conflict with the other main resistance group, the Serbian Chetniks, with the result that the Chetniks ended up by 1943 collaborating with the Nazis against the Partisans.

By the end of the war the Partisans numbered about 800,000 men and women, drawn from every part of Jugoslavia. In addition to the fighters, the Women's Antifascist Front supported the Partisans, took over the burden of agriculture, and also worked to care for and educate the huge numbers of children orphaned by the violence.

The Partisans I painted this week are meant to represent a group from late 1943 in Croatia or Western Bosnia. They have managed to uniform most of their members from Italian uniforms captured after the Italian capitulation, and have managed to get hold of an Italian L3/33 tankette, rapidly painting red stars over the Italian markings. A few men still have civilian clothing, and a couple wear German tunics. Weapons are either of German or Italian origin.

The figures are a mix, based mainly on Perry Italian infantry with heads and bits from Warlord kits and greenstuff caps. The ones in civilian clothing are from Crusader Miniatures. 10 figures, a tank and a couple of crew should get me 175 points, as I edge towards my goal of 1500!

'Fellowship' from Barks: Nine Adventurers

Nine legendary adventurers; men, halflings, an elf... it must be Blackstone Fortress. I've painted three of this Fellowship up for other Theme rounds here and here. Here's all my Nine Walkers:

And here's the remaining six for your review today:

The Rogue Trader

Janus Draik is a Rogue Trader. I've always seen them as a bit grubbier and more Han Solo-ish than GW's latest aristocratic incarnations, but hey. I thought he looked like a Napoleonic Russian general, and painted him up thus inspired. His pistol is an Eldar prize.

The Navigator

GW has gone 110% with a distinctive helm for Espern Locarno. The diamond-shaped third eye navigator icon is present front and back on this miniature. He's the support wizard for your group.

The Priest

Taddeus the Purifier, AKA The Tad, AKA Battle Pope. He's got a prominent belly, and I  like his gun-servo skull. As befits a member of the Ecclesiarchy, he's festooned in skullz (10).

The Zealot

His off-sider is Pious Vorne, whose therapy sessions start with firing up her flamethrowing chainsaw. She hits hard, but cannot sustain much damage herself. I'm really happy with how her flames, cloth, and armour came out.

The Robot

The most amusing character is UR-025. He's a 10 000 year old 'Man of Iron', an artificial intelligence looking to link with the AI of the Blackstone Fortress. AIs are anathema to the Imperium, so UR is pretending to be a dumb robot! I painted the sculpt in an industrial yellow, which I think I've now got the hang of. He's got lots of nice detailed hatches and access ports.

The Elf Ranger

I've always liked the aesthetic of the Biel Tan Eldar craftworld with their green and white scheme. Amallyn Shadowguide is a Biel Tan ranger, but I'm not a huge fan of her pose, unfortunately. I'm least happy with the pink knife, but her other gems came out fine. I wasn't going to paint the thorns on her cameleoline cloak, but I'm glad I did.

I've rather enjoyed painting these varied and colourful figures. BSF has allowed GW to dig into its history a bit, and is an excuse for weirder and more wonderful miniatures. The game really is a dungeon crawl in space, with archetypal elf rangers, clerics, wizards, thieves etc. It was a goal of mine to get this set done over the Challenge, which I'm glad to say I have done. It has, however, taken me longer than planned- which I really should have anticipated.

Skull-o-meter™: 12

5x28mm and 1x 40mm: 32 points

'Fellowship' from DaveX: Downed Luftwaffe Aircrew

For the Fellowship Bonus Round I picked one of those packs of miniatures I would probably never get around to painting if I wasn't participating in this challenge.  I chose the Foundry Miniatures Downed German Aircrew.  These are old sculpts but terrific sculpts from the infamous Perry Twins.

These can be used for any WW2 Game, specifically I will be using them for Chain of Command and Bolt Action.  They could be an objective or a squad.

I haven't painted WW2 in 28mm in a long time so it is nice to return to the subject.  I really think there is a special bond, or shall we say fellowship among men who served as bomber aircrew in the war, regardless of what flag they fought under.

The miniatures depicted here tell the story of our fellowship's most desperate hour.  They are shotdown, they survived and now they are behind enemy lines.  Are they in a lush field in England? Rural France? or is our fellowship desperately avoiding capture from the Soviets somewhere on the Eastern Front?

This should net me a very handy 90 points.  8 x 28mm Figures plus bonus round.

'Fellowship' from FranL: Irish UN Force

Totally forgot about the bonus until 25 minutes ago, hence the shocking pictures taken under a caravan light and some hastily written drivel, we are both using the internet and the pictures took 30 mins to download.........

This was a project bought quite a while ago for my modern period but thought I could use it represent fellowship, a force to represent the Irish army serving with the UN, I had to use eureka minis Australians who carry the steyr as a damn close representation (well in my mind maybe) and two scorpions (the only 15mm vehicles currently available to buy).....

I consider the Irish military a fellowship of brotherhood and professionalism especially with it's service with the UN (a member since 1955, peacekeepers since 1958, 86 lives lost in that time), there is a link for further information....

I painted the minis in the best representation of the current uniform and even tried the tricolour patch on their uniforms, the UN on the helmet may happen in the future.....

Pictures are shocking.......

I had them in a scenario where they are assisting Israeli forces on the Golan Heights (where there are Irish forces currently) fighting the zombie hordes from World War Z!

32 figures and 2 vehicles......

'Fellowship' from FranjoB: Gandalf the White, Lord of Middle Earth

Hi all,

Those past weeks I was separated from my brushes and paints. Other things have occupied my spare time and I could not do what I had planned: to paint 14 Fellowship of the Ring and allies (nine companions, another versions of Gandalf and Aragorn, Elrond and Galadriel and, of course, the destroyer himself of the Ring, Smeagol). They were 20mm miniatures from the Ares Games War of the Ring boardgame and its expansion Lords of Middle Earth.

To my dismay, I was only able to paint two miniatures: Gandalf the White raiding Shadowfax over the fields of Pelennor:

I know it's a bit cheesy to claim my bonus theme points with only two miniatures... but there it is.

Thanks, Curt
