'Characters/Scene from' IsobelS: Legolas and Eowyn

Hi everyone! Just going to make a very quick post for the last bonus challenge. For this week I decided to paint some Lord of the Rings figurines that AledC had lying around. I chose these two in particular because Legolas was always my favourite character and I really liked the Eowyn mould. Both of these figures have a beautiful movement to them; I particularly like Legolas' cloak and Eowyn's hair.

The only thing I didn't like about these figures was fitting them into the slot bases and the horrific lean that both of them had. I had a really hard time getting them to sensible levels of upright and even then I feel that maybe they're a bit too exaggerated. Oh well.

I'll also point out that this was my first foray into painting eyes and eyebrows. It was a bit tricky and nothing that I would go doing again in a hurry, particularly for generic army men as opposed to character models.

I really enjoyed painting these two figures and they gave me motivation to keep ploughing through the rest of the little guys I have on my painting table to submit for the challenge.

'West' from IsobelS: Dead Man's Hand

Hello everyone!

Unfortunately, this post is going to be very brief as I am currently in the middle of a move and don't have an appropriate amount to sit down and write a complex and meaningful entry. Anyways, for the "West" Bonus Round I decided to paint up a figure that I have had for a little while now.

Ignore the messy work space.

This guy is a 28mm Reaper Miniature called 'Undead Cowboy'. I think the name is fairly accurate with what we're dealing with.

Close up without the flash

A bit of a high angle so you can see the base a bit better.

And a shot of his back.

He was surprisingly quick to paint up, but I think that is mostly because there was nothing particularly fancy about the colour palette I used. I tried to invoke a bit of an American Civil War vibe by painting his uniform blue like a Union troop but I'm not sure how well I pulled it off.

This guy was also a practice in glow effects and object source lighting. As I have mentioned before I have a large and growing collection of skeleton figures. To tie them all together I am planning on giving them all blue glowing eyes, so this guy was a bit of a dry run on this technique. I don't think it turned out amazingly but I don't think it's too shabby either, just something that I need to continue practicing.

That's all that I've got time for at the moment but stayed tuned for some more skeletons. Thank you!

'Home' from IsobelS: A Home at the End of the Line

Hello everyone! For this bonus round I chose to go for "home" terrain that was a bit morbid. The two reasons I chose these particular pieces were; 1. They were hanging around and needed to get done, and 2. I have a large collection of Undead figures that need somewhere to live. So I present my submission of a Russain style church and some grave stones to go with it.

My church and small graveyard (liquid nails and mug not included)

Unfortunately, the provenance of the church is unknown as I inherited it from AledC's Dad. I do believe though that at one stage it was a choose-your-own-parts-and-assemble job due to the different windows, and the entrance, have evidence of both super glue and liquid nails sticking them to the main body.

To paint the church I first undercoated with Army Painter Uniform Grey Spray Primer then I made a black wash from tube acrylic paints and liquefying medium and heavily wash the whole thing, putting extra washes on the roof tiles. I then painted the brown of the wood and spinneret, as well as the gold. I then dry brushed the bricks with a white tube acrylic and then roof tiles with a dark grey. After this, I painted the stain glass windows.

The resting place of my opponent's figures.

For the grave stones, I did the exact same process with the priming, dry brushing, and washing. For the base, I first sanded then painted with tube acrylic Burnt Sienna, then dry brushed with Raw Umber, and finished it off with some turf green flock. I have many more of these gravestone bases/terrain that didn't get finished in time. I intend to use them as an arrange it yourself deal so you can have as little or as much gravestone as you would like.

Picture proof that I have even more!

As I was painting up the church and gravestones for the bonus round, I also found some Japanese tombstones that I decided to paint up as well.

Even more graves!

Close-ups

I actually primed these guys with the Army Painter Matt Black Spray primer then heavily dry brushed them the Vallejo Neutral Grey, followed by a lighter dry brush of the Vallejo White. The basing is still the same, though these guys are on poker chips.
I actually intend on using these guys as either casualty markers or a half strength unit of ghosts for Dragon Rampant. So even though they're not going to be used as terrain, I thought that this would be the most appropriate time to submit them.

So that's it, my submission for the "home" bonus round. Next up on the painting block is a few skeletons that will serve as test subject and practice for rust and glow effects. Wish me luck!

'East' from IsobelS: Russians on the High Seas

Hello again everyone! Although I said my next submission would be some Napoleonics, I thought I should try to make an entry for this theme round "East". So, I present to you a small portion of a Dystopian Wars fleet from the Russian Coalition. I figured that Russia was in Eastern Europe and that would be enough to legitimize these cute little guys as East.

These guys having been causing me a few headaches in their painting. Firstly, I had wanted to do them up for the "Armour" theme round (as they have the special rule "ablative armour" in Dystopian Wars), however, I didn't get around to finishing them this time. There are also four larger ships that I also hoped to submit this time around but they have been a plentiful source of frustration in their painting and thus do not make the cut this submission either. Hopefully, I'll get around to finishing them later in the challenge.

Anyways, let's meet the gang.

We promise that we're not just rubber dingies!

First up there's these 10 little Doughnuts of Doom, the Novgorods. These guys measure 3cm in diameter and stand 1.5cm from bough to the top of smoke stack. To paint them, I first undercoated in White with the Army Painter Primer, painted the decks with Vallejo Ochre Yellow, painted the small buildings with Army Painter Leather Brown, painted to smoke stacks with a 50/50 mix of Army Painter Black and Game Colour Gunmetal, painted the mortars (the spiky bits in the middle) Army Painter Dragon Blood Red, painted the main turrets and other finishings with the Game Colour Gunmetal, and then painted all the pipes and some other finishing in Vallejo Old Gold. I then washed everything down with Citadel Seraphim Sepia wash and picked out the details Citadel Nuln Oil. I then dry brushed each individual bit with their base colour.

With me so far? Ok so next up is the Saransk Medium Bombers.

Not sure how the physics works on these ones

These 2 airships measure 3.5cm long and just under 2cm tall. They also painted up surprisingly quickly, which is always nice. The paint them, I first undercoated with Army Painter Platemail Primer, I then painted the windows in a 50/50 mix of Game Colour Imperial Blue and Game Colour Magic blue and then highlighted with a pure Magic Blue, and then I picked out all the pipes with the Vallejo Old Gold. I then got a little bit fancy and water down some Game Colour Green Ink and did a sparring wash of the armoured cap on the front to try and give it a bit of a used oily feel. I then washed it all down with Citadel Nuln Oil. After this, I gave the armour cap a little bit of extra love by dry brushing with Army Painter Platemail, and then with Citadel Necron Compound around the more prominent parts.

Now last, and most definitely least, The Russian Tiny Flyers.

How can they possibly be deadly when they're so cute?

There are 10 of these little tiles, each one measuring 2cm by 2cm. To paint these guys, I first undercoated with Army Painter Platemail Primer, then I began by painting the sky/ocean, as well as the cockpits, with a 50/50 mix of Game Colour Imperial Blue and Game Colour Magic Blue and then highlighting/dry brushing with just Magic Blue, then I painted the tips of the wings with Army Painter Dragon Blood Red, I neatened up the border with some Army Painter Platemail, and then very lightly washed the Flyers and the borders with Citadel Nuln Oil.

And that my submission for "East". Not sure what the point values will end up being, but I'm just glad to have them finished. I'll keep working on the Napoleonics and hopefully have them ready in the not too distant future. Until then, have fun painting everyone!
