'Reconnaissance' from EvanH: The Fungi From Yuggoth

Gazzzz: "Hey Bazzzz! Get over here! Check this out!"

Bazzzz: "What is it now? I'm in the middle of something."

Gazzzz: "Nah mate, come on...!"

Bazzzz: "This had better be good, Gazzzz. Brains don't just bottle themselves, you know."

Gazzzz: "Look, something to help us spy on the Humaaanzzzz!"

Bazzzz: "The what?"

Gazzzz: "The HUMAAAAANNZZZZ!!!"

Bazzzz: "You mean 'humans'?"

Gazzzz: "Yeah, but it sounds way creepier and more alien-y if I say 'HUMAAAAANNZZZZ'".

Bazzzz: "Whatever. What is it then?"

Gazzzz: "Telescope!"

Bazzzz: "Yeah? What's it do?"

Gazzzz: "Magnifies the view of a distant object through use of lenses to refract light, making it easier to see. Brilliant!"

Bazzzz: "It's a human thing then? Where'd you get it?"

Gazzzz: "Put on the old human suit and went down to that village place. Bought it off a bloke in the pub."

Bazzzz: "Right. OK, show me how it works."

Gazzzz: "Well, you just put your eye to the little end, and... Oh..."

Bazzzz: "Yeah. EYES. Those sensory organs WE DON'T HAVE. We don't do visible light on Yuggoth, we don't even do windows, so what made you think we'd start trying all that out here on Earth? You numpty!"

Gazzzz: "I thought I was helping advance the mission of conquest..."

Bazzzz: "Mate, you'll be advancing the mission of getting a kick up the secondary cloacal vent if you don't lift your game. What are we supposed to do with this now?"

Gazzzz: "Well... we could pretend it's a mic stand and try a bit of stand-up to help morale? 'The Fun Guys From Yuggoth'...? Geddit...? 'The Fun Guys From...' Bazzzz....? Bazzzz....?"

Bazzzz: "Still got a few empty brain bottles left, Gazzzz. Just saying."

The two figures are Reaper Bones Mi-Go, the Fungi from Yuggoth (aka Pluto). These evil alien intelligences first appeared in H.P. Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness, published in 1931.

They ply the deeps of space and visit remote corners of the Earth to seek out minerals not found on their homeworld (harvesting the brains of selected humans for later interrogation is merely one of the perks of the job).

Still, I imagine that even malevolent cosmic horrors have bad days at work, with co-workers getting on their nerves, and for Bazzzz, this has probably been one of them.

The telescope was part of a WizKids set of 25/28mm Navigational Instruments, and I think it's quite a charming little piece. I do like it when companies make little bits of set dressing; always nice to have on hand, especially if you're short on time to make these details yourself.

As to scoring, Gazzzz and Bazzzz are 28mm figures and should come in at 5 points each. The telescope is 25mm tall, but it's nowhere near as bulky as a figure of the equivalent height, so I'd treat it as a 15mm fig and give it 2 points.

That's all until next week - stay tuned!

  2. Haha! Love it. Mi-Go's have always cracked me up. If you ever get the chance, pick up Peter Rawlik's 'The Reanimators' and 'The Weird Company'. Two of the best Cthulhu books I've ever read.

BTW, one of these would be awesome in my collection Ev. You know, just sayin' ;P

    1. They would, technically speaking, have to be The Fungi From Gorgoroth to qualify as Curtgeld this year...

    2. Hey man, just do what you have to do. Besides you know Tolkien was riffing Lovecraft with the Watcher in the Water. :)
